General Description
Mendoza is Argentina's wine heartland — a sprawling, tree-lined city at the foot of the Andes, where the main business of happiness is Malbec. The city itself is flat, leafy and walkable, but the real draws are the surrounding bodegas: Maipú's bikeable vineyard circuit, the upscale wineries of Luján de Cuyo, and the high-altitude cellars of Valle de Uco.
Beyond the wine, Mendoza is the springboard for the Andes — day trips to the Aconcagua summit area and Puente del Inca, rafting on the Mendoza river, and the spectacular 120-km drive over the Andes to Santiago. Three days is the sweet spot: one city, one bike circuit, one mountain day.
Getting Around
The center and the main parks are easy on foot, and ride-hailing (Uber, Cabify, Didi) covers longer hops at night. The wine circuits need wheels: bikes work perfectly on the flat Maipú loop (many bodegas rent them on site), while Luján and Valle de Uco need a car or a tour.
City buses reach some bodegas but schedules are thin — a guided tour is the stress-free default for a one-day tasting. The bus terminal connects Mendoza with Buenos Aires (14–15 hours overnight, book a 'cama' seat) and with Santiago de Chile.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Dry, sunny and continental — 300+ sunny days a year and a big day-night swing. Summer (December–February) tops 30°C with occasional afternoon storms; autumn (March–May) is mild and golden, harvest time and the best season overall. Winter (June–August) is crisp at 5–15°C with clear, cold nights, and spring (September–November) warms quickly with winds from the north.
Best time to visit: Sep – Apr; March is harvest season
Money & Cards
Cards are accepted in most bodegas, restaurants and hotels of Mendoza, and the city is one of the simplest places in Argentina for cashless travel. Keep some pesos for market stalls, the winery gift shops off the tourist circuit and cash-only parrillas — and exchange at a cambio rather than an ATM. Taste-room fees (usually refunded with a purchase) are standard practice.
