General Description
Salta is the colonial jewel of the Argentine northwest — a well-preserved whitewashed city of churches, arcaded plazas and the folk-music bars they call peñas. Locals call it 'Salta la Linda' (Salta the beautiful), and its gentle altitude and sunny climate make it the perfect base for the region's road trips.
The surrounding landscape is the real show: red-rock gorges, the fog-rolled Cuesta del Obispo pass, high-altitude salt flats and the rainbow-hued hills of Purmamarca and Humahuaca. Three days in the city (one of them on the Tren a las Nubes or a valley tour) plus a multi-day loop by car or tour covers the north properly — the full circuit needs six or seven days.
Getting Around
The old center is compact and walkable, and Uber/Cabify work reliably. Day trips (Cafayate gorge, Cachi, Purmamarca, Salinas Grandes) run as shared minibus tours from dozens of agencies around Plaza 9 de Julio — cheap and hassle-free.
For the full northwest loop you want your own wheels: a high-clearance SUV, booked in Salta (see the Northwest deep dive for the route). The Tren a las Nubes runs weekends, weather permitting, and the bus terminal connects Salta with Córdoba and Buenos Aires overnight.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Dry, sunny highland climate with sharp temperature swings. In summer (December–February) days are hot with heavy afternoon storms that can wash out unpaved roads — the north loop is best avoided. Autumn (March–May) is warm and golden, the ideal window. Winter (June–August) is clear and crisp with freezing nights at altitude; spring (September–November) is dry and bright as it warms. Pack layers for wind and the 4,000 m passes whatever the season.
Best time to visit: Mar – Nov; April and May are ideal for the road loop
Money & Cards
Cards work in Salta's hotels and restaurants, but the region runs on cash — markets, museum tickets, roadside empanada stands and most small tour operators are cash-first. Withdraw plenty in Salta before heading to Cachi, Cafayate or Humahuaca: ATM coverage gets thin fast beyond the city. Carry small bills; changes are scarce in the pueblos.
