General Description
Ushuaia is the world's southernmost city — a working port under snow-dusted peaks on the Beagle Channel, where the mountain meets the sea and the next stop south is Antarctica. It is the natural first landing spot of a south-to-north Argentina route: you fly in, do the end-of-the-world sights, and work your way up the country.
The essential experiences are the Beagle Channel boat trip past sea lions, cormorants and the red-and-white lighthouse; the penguin colonies of Isla Martillo; the Tren del Fin del Mundo steam train into Tierra del Fuego national park; and a walk in the park's coastal forests. Three days is right, and four never hurts.
Getting Around
The town is strung along the waterfront for a few kilometers — walkable, with Uber and taxis for the hillside neighborhoods. Everything else is a tour: boats for the channel and penguin islands leave from the pier and book out in summer; the national park is 12 km away via the park buses or the end-of-the-world train.
Ushuaia is also the world's launchpad for Antarctic cruises — most white-continent expeditions stop here for 1–2 nights before sailing, and the port offers last-minute berths in the shoulder seasons.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Sub-Antarctic maritime climate — cold, wet and windy, with moods that change hourly. Summer (November–March) is 'warm': 5–15°C and long daylight, the only real window for the region. December and January are the most settled; February is golden. Autumn (April–May) turns cold and stormy, and winter (June–August) brings snow, freezing temperatures and the ski season at Cerro Castor. Layers, a windproof shell and waterproof boots are the uniform.
Best time to visit: Nov – Mar; December to February is the sweet spot
Money & Cards
Ushuaia is expensive — everything ships to the end of the world, and prices run 30–50% above the mainland. Cards work in most hotels and agencies, but cash (pesos) matters for small vendors, market stalls and park fees. ATMs exist but are fee-heavy; organize cash in Buenos Aires. Boat trips and the train are significantly cheaper booked through local agencies than online.
