Overview

The Carretera Austral is the road Chile built to reach its own south — a 1,240 km ribbon of gravel carved through raw Patagonia between Puerto Montt and the frontier town of Villa O'Higgins. There are no highways here, only ferries, fjords, hanging glaciers and small frontier settlements where the road still ends.

It is not a drive you rush. The reward of going slow is the rhythm of the landscape: emerald lakes under ice caps, forests of lenga and coigüe, and the rare feeling of being genuinely far from everything.

Planning the drive

A high-clearance SUV is strongly recommended — parts of the road are unpaved and river crossings are common. Fuel is scarce beyond Coyhaique, so plan around the pump towns (Cochrane is the last reliable station until Villa O'Higgins).

Book the two mandatory ferries (Caleta La Arena and Punta Yungay near Hornopirén) in advance during December–February. Cash is essential in the small settlements; card terminals are rare south of Coyhaique.

Highlights along the way

The stretch from Puyuhuapi to Puerto Río Tranquilo is the postcard section: turquoise rivers, the Queulat hanging glacier, and the marble caves on General Carrera lake. Chaitén and its volcano are worth a stop, and the road over the Cuesta Quebrada del Viento rewards drivers with huge views of the Baker river valley.

Torres del Paine trekkers typically begin in Puerto Natales, reachable via a scenic ferry across the Seno Última Esperanza.

Practical tips

• Drive with headlights on at all times — it is both safer and the local norm.
• The road is closed for hours after heavy rain; check conditions in Coyhaique before leaving.
• Winter (June–August) closes sections and ferries; plan for October–March only.
• Pack warm layers even in summer — Patagonian wind is relentless.
• Fill the tank whenever you can: distances between stations are up to 300 km.
