General Description
Puerto Natales is a working port town turned trekking hub, sitting on the fjord of Seno Última Esperanza — the Last Hope Sound. Its single long avenue faces the water, with the silhouette of the Cerro Benítez massif rising to the north. Almost everyone who comes here is on the way to Torres del Paine, but the town earns a day of its own: the Cueva del Milodón, the view from Cerro Dorotea, and some of the best cheap steak houses in Chilean Patagonia.
It is also the most convenient place in Chile to stock up — trekking gas, food for the trail, and gear rentals are all cheaper and better here than inside the park.
Getting Around
The town center is a 10-minute walk end to end. Buses to Torres del Paine leave from the terminal next to the waterfront in the early morning (1.5–2 hours); book the day before in summer. Buses Turismo Zaahj and Buses Gómez run the route, and most tours include pickup.
Punta Arenas is 3 hours south by bus, and in summer there are flights from Santiago via Puerto Montt. The ferry to Puerto Yungay — the scenic shortcut to the Carretera Austral — sails from the port in the summer season.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Patagonian steppe climate: cool year-round, windy, and changeable in minutes. Summer (December–February) brings 10–15°C days with long daylight and the best stability; outside summer expect rain, strong wind and cold. The classic advice still holds — be ready for all four seasons in one day.
Best time to visit: November to March
Money & Cards
ATMs cluster around Plaza de Armas; Banco Estado and Scotiabank work with foreign cards. Many hostels and agencies take cards, but trekking fuel, small shops and the park's refugios prefer cash — withdraw enough before the trek. The town is touristy, so prices are 10–20% above Chilean norms.
