General Description

Punta Arenas is the largest city in Chilean Patagonia and the main crossing point on the Strait of Magellan — the historic gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific. It is a proper town with grand European-style mansions from the wool boom, a lively waterfront, and the best shopping for trekking gear in Chile thanks to its duty-free zone.

It is also the base for Patagonia's classic wildlife and fjord trips: the penguin colonies of Isla Magdalena, the Magellan Strait cruises, and day trips across the water to Tierra del Fuego. Most travelers use it as a transit hub — the airport has good connections — but the penguins alone justify a full day.

Getting Around

The city center is compact and walkable; everything from Plaza Muñoz Gamero to the waterfront is within 20 minutes. Uber and Cabify work well for the airport and the outer districts.

Buses connect Punta Arenas with Puerto Natales (3 hours) — the main route to Torres del Paine. The ferry to Porvenir (Tierra del Fuego) sails from Tres Puentes port, and summer cruises leave for Puerto Williams and the fjords.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Cool and windy year-round. Summer (December–February) brings 10–15°C days with long light; winter is cold, dark and windy. The wind is the defining feature — it blows hard and can flip the weather in an hour, so layers and a windbreaker are non-negotiable.

Best time to visit: November to March

Money & Cards

ATMs are plentiful in the center. Cards work in most places, but the penguin boat trip, bus tickets and the duty-free stalls like cash. The Zona Franca (duty-free zone) is worth a visit for gear, electronics and alcohol — bring your passport for purchases.
