General Description

San Pedro is a small adobe town that has grown into the launchpad of the world's driest desert. Everything around it feels otherworldly: the lunar valley at sunset, the world's highest geyser field steaming at dawn, salt flats dotted with flamingos, and night skies so clear they host the world's largest telescopes.

Most travelers spend three to four days here, taking one trip per day — there is no rush, and the desert rewards patience. The town itself is charming in a dusty, desert way: a sandy plaza, craft markets, and a restaurant scene that punches far above its size.

Getting Around

The town center is walkable, but every attraction is a drive away, so tours and rental cars are the norm. The tourist office and dozens of agencies sell organized trips to Valle de la Luna, El Tatio and the altiplano lagoons — cheaper if booked in town rather than online.

Renting a 4x4 from Calama or San Pedro works well for confident drivers; the desert roads are graded but washboarded, and routes close after rain. Bicycle rental is popular for the flat ride to Valle de la Luna, though entry there is limited to morning hours for cyclists.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Hyper-arid all year: brilliant sunshine, bone-dry air and huge temperature swings. Days reach 20–25°C, nights drop toward 0°C — after dark in winter it can freeze. The altiplano (4,000 m+) is always cold, especially before sunrise at El Tatio. Occasional afternoon rain in the high Andes during summer (December–February).

Best time to visit: March to November

Money & Cards

Card payment works in most restaurants and hostels, but tours, markets and smaller operators are cash-first — take out pesos in Calama or Santiago. Withdrawal fees are high in San Pedro itself, so bring enough for a few days. Prices here run a tourist premium: budget 30,000–50,000 CLP per person per day.
