General Description
Santiago is a city of contrasts — glass towers against a 5,000-meter Andes wall, colonial plazas beside world-class galleries. It is the country's transport hub, its cultural center, and the natural starting point for almost every trip to Chile.
Give it at least three days: one for the historic center and markets, one for the museums and the San Cristóbal cable car, and one for the day trips to the Maipo valley wineries or the Pacific coast.
Getting Around
The Metro is fast, clean and covers all the neighborhoods you will need — get a bip! card at any station. Uber and Cabify are cheap and reliable for the last kilometer, and walking is genuinely pleasant in the central districts, especially Bellavista and Lastarria.
For the airport, the Centropuerto bus costs a fraction of a taxi and runs around the clock.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Mediterranean: hot, dry summers (December–February, up to 32°C) and cool, rainy winters (June–August). Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing — warm days, crisp air, and the mountains are clear of haze.
Best time to visit: October to March
Money & Cards
Card payment is the norm in Santiago — most cafés and restaurants accept contactless Visa/Mastercard. Keep 50,000–100,000 CLP in cash for markets and street food. ATMs are everywhere; Banco Estado is most reliable with foreign cards.
